COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  •  Explain how the essence of meditative practice lies in how we live our lives from moment to moment--formal meditative practices, relationships, and all aspects of our lives.
  • Discuss teachings and practices that offer an experience of mindfulness that is entirely congruent with our fast-paced lives in the 21st Century--effective, portable, and easily adopted.
  • Utilize guided instruction in mindful walking, sitting meditation, and mindful hatha yoga--Jon Kabat-Zinn makes it easy and offers step-by-step instructions.
  • Observe Kabat-Zinn's responses to questions from workshop participants--deepening our understanding of, and the commitment to, the cultivation of mindfulness.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., is a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher who has been instrumental in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine, healthcare, and society. He is professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, founder of its Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society and of the world-renowned mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) clinic. He is the best-selling author of several books, including Full Catastrophe Living, Wherever You Go, There You Are and Coming to Our Senses

This boxed set combines two digitally remastered programs conducted in 1994, available for the first time together:

Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life

Kabat-Zinn makes it clear that the essence of meditative practice lies in how one lives one's life from moment to moment, in all its aspects and relationships, and not merely in formal meditative practices. This program offers an experience of mindfulness that is entirely congruent with our lives in the 21st Century: it is effective, portable, and easily adopted -- a perfect antidote to life in the fast lane.

Mindfulness Meditation Workshop: Exercises and Meditations

In this follow-up to Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life, Kabat-Zinn adds a decidedly American flair to the elusive art of living fully in each moment as it unfolds. This 6-disc segment includes guided instruction in mindful walking, sitting meditation, mindful hatha yoga, and also Kabat-Zinn's responses to questions from workshop participants, which may help deepen both one's understanding and commitment to the cultivation of mindfulness.

Have you ever done a walking meditation?  Or even a standing meditation?  Jon Kabat-Zinn makes it easy and offers step-by-step instruction in this transcribed excerpt from his "Mindfulness Meditation Workshop:"

"Now walking meditation. Walking meditation is the same thing as walking only you know that you are walking and sometimes it is valuable to slow it down at first so that you can really pay attention to the aspects of it. So one way to do it is to just become aware of the impulse to lift, say, the left leg and to move the foot out in front of you and to feel it as you place it down on the floor, heel, and then the rest of the foot. That is a lifting, a moving, and a placing..."

Insightful with honesty, clarity and humor too! :)

I have listened to some of Jon's work in the past, this is an excellent addition to those prior teachings.
I appreciate his keep-it-simple approach, down-to-earth honesty, his gentle humor and tone of voice, getting to hear the raisin meditation and also the walking meditations were both new to me.
I love that he is balanced in his approach, he focuses on paying attention and that there is nothing particularly mystical or magical in that. Paying attention on purpose, voluntarily attending to the present moment and doing so non-judgmentally really spoke to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and the question/answer session at the end. I knew Jon does work in hospitals but did not know about his work in prisons. I was delightfully inspired learning about Jon's past too as an added bonus. It's neat to hear a spiritual teacher talking about their upbringing.
I highly recommend this set and appreciate learning how to handle the storms as well as reach deep relaxation. Namaste.

Clear, concise, informative with a variety of meditation sessions!

Worth listening to as Jon Kabat-Zinn is an excellent, engaging speaker! I like his positive energy, his passion for meditation and the ease in which he puts this across. It feels like this audio book is in ‘real time’ as it’s a live recording. You can meditate with him as he takes you through actual meditation sessions. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced in meditation (I have been practising on/off for almost 20 years), I think you’ll find something positive to take away from this programme. Jon successfully highlights things like the importance of meditation being a personal process although you can also choose to meditate in the same space as others. Through his talk, I was reminded to feel my experiences and pay attention on purpose in the present moment without judgement (being mindful). I like that he explains different practices of meditation. There is real depth to this programme; you’re going to want to listen to it more than once!

Very clear recording, though i couldn't follow the practice instructions in the beginning. One clear distinction I got is healing and curing. There's a difference and Jon Kabat Zinn explain it well. I like his clarity and authencity in answering the questions. Thank you.
