The Power of Focus — Daniel Goleman and Brian TracyPosted August 03 2016
A Psychology Today article by author-psychologist Daniel Goleman discusses the secret to accomplishing our goals—focus. Focus allows us to “concentrate on what we are doing, manage our priorities, and ignore distractions,” he writes. “The more focused we are, the more successful we can be at whatever we do. And, conversely, the more distracted, the less well we do. This applies across the board: sports, school, career,” Goleman says. Goleman also notes that our ability to focus is a mental muscle, and that we can train it by bringing our attention to our breath whenever our mind wanders off. Sounds a lot like mindfulness, doesn’t it?
Goleman isn’t the only author writing about the benefits of focus. Best-selling personal development author Brian Tracy also places focus at the forefront of his strategy for personal success. Tracy argues that in a world filled with negativity, it is necessary to remain strong, energized, and positive in order to achieve our goals. According to Tracy’s website, The Science of Positive Focus is Tracy’s personal success system that “allows us to achieve all of our goals, no matter what, or who, is around you.” Tracy says some of the benefits of his personal success system are:
- Dramatically increased productivity.
- More clarity on what one wants.
- Increased income.
- Elimination of negativity.
- Increased self-actualization.
What are your goals and how well are you prioritizing them?
