Deconstructing Food (Guest Post)

You might have noticed a few more posts about food and recipes recently on the blog. Don’t worry, I won’t turn into a Pinterest foodie feed on you just yet. It’s just that all this reading and cooking has made me quite passionate.

I’ve been greatly influenced by renaissance food writers like Michael Pollan. (If you haven’t checked his doc “Cooked” on Netflix or read his books: Do it!)

I didn’t invent this phenomenon, I’m just hoping more and more people clue in. I sure have!

We’re in a world that places convenience above all. But at what cost? I like the trend that people are starting to care what’s in their food. It also makes a huge difference when you’re fueling yourself for runs, cycling, and your hikes.

It’s also quite accessible these days. You don’t know how to do something? Google it. Or better yet, YouTube it! I do it almost daily…

I made my first batch of bread this weekend. It wasn’t perfect but I can guarantee you it had more nutrients than that white bread from the store.

I’m not a chef, and I don’t play one on the internet, but in the past few months, I’ve made so many things from scratch including soups, fancy meals, and even chocolate! It’s been fun and easier than I thought.

I now look at food as a labor of love (well I always have) and more as an investment. It’s been quite therapeutic for me. Here’s what the great Mr. Pollan has to say, and I’m starting to think I agree:

“The best diet is: eat anything you want as long as you cook it yourself.”

We also have a cool initiative in Ottawa started by Pamela Tourigny called Eat Your Veggies. I went to one of their cooking classes recently and it was amazing. Fun and informative. And hands-on!

You should probably check out their next one – you’ll thank me, and so will your health!
