(Digitally Remastered) Huston Smith believes that the fundamental problem facing the Western world is one of not knowing our essential identity. In the first half of this program Smith articulates the nature and genesis of this problem, while in the second half he offers suggestions on how we might resolve this dilemma. Discussed at length is the incompatibility of the modern scientific model, which views man as a biological organism, with the historical model provided by the Judeo Christian religious tradition. This lecture was recorded at the Krotona School of Theosophy in Ojai, California. 1985. 158 minutes.

Huston Smith, Ph.D., is widely regarded as the most learned and literary contemporary writer on the history of religions. Formerly the Professor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University. He produced three series of films for National Education Television. His books include the classic The World's Religions, and Why Religion Matters.
