They’re not coming from me. They’re not coming from Thich, Nhat Hanh or whoever the person you might like to project onto that is wise and knowledgeable.
Those seeds are inside yourself.
They’re more your true nature than any story that your thinking mind can concoct and so I wish you well as your meditation challenge continues to unfold with one more piece of advice.
Don’t make meditation into a big deal either.
It’s nothing other than life itself unfolding in awareness moment by moment.
So as I said, “Just This”. When you rest in Just This, the entire world is already awake in an entirely different way than it was the moment before. and so meditation is not all about navel gazing and self-centeredness.
In fact, it’s the exact opposite. If you want to heal the world, then what the world is most starving for is you and your true nature to appear.
And then in a selfless way, in an ethical way, give what it’s possible to give to your community to the world that is in such sorry need of generosity, kindness, caring, compassion
The real challenge is to be who you are already, since of course, you can’t help it.
But we get so distracted in so much in our own way that we’re always trying to get back to some place that actually were we don’t need to attain because we’re already what we’re looking for, so simply settling in underneath my words, inside the words and what they’re pointing to in yourself.
One of the first things you’ll notice is that there’s a lot going on in the present moment, But one thing you can count on, no matter what else is going on in your mind, for instance, is that, uh, the body is breathing, no matter what’s going on in your life.
And so it’s kind of a reliable anchor for your attention.
And just as with the sound of the bells, you can drop into the feeling of sitting in an erect and dignified posture if you’re sitting or lying down or standing.

Piver discusses how she became interested in the Enneagram and how it relates to her study of Buddhism. She explains that her efforts to become a more compassionate person led her to use the Enneagram in real-life situations instead of just relying on belief systems. She has been teaching this approach for about 6-8 years, not since she started studying it 30 years ago. The speaker considers it a skillful means that helps her remain connected to others, even in situations that are challenging. Throughout the episode, Piver emphasizes the importance of compassion and its role in expanding wisdom, kindness, and truth. She uses the example of preventing a child from touching a stove to emphasize that compassion is anything that prevents suffering. ]]>Steve’s Story: I wanted to share this story about working with His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Richard Gere years ago at Madison Square Garden. In 1991, holy smokes, it was a long time ago, more than 30 something years ago. I had the good fortune to record His Holiness this iconic event in the heart of NYC..
And we sold tapes there and it was quite an event. Here’s a personal anecdote. There was a five day event in, it was the Penta Hotel across the street from Madison Square Garden where they held a summit of the elders of all the different five lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.
It was a sellout crowd for that. There were maybe 5 or 600 people. And that was incredible. And I remember Richard Gere, he kind of ran the whole thing along with Tibet House, I believe. And Cindy Crawford was there every morning. You know, it was epic. And then I want to tell you a little story.
After that first 5 day event, there was four days of teachings with The Dalai Lama, which was incredible, and working with Richard Gere was just phenomenal. After some back and forth I did get a chance to have one on one conversation with him. He starts the conversation, “Steve, so what’s your hustle?” You know, everyone wants a piece of him, so “what’s your hustle?” he says. And I said, I just want to connect with you, let you know what we’re doing.
Told him I’d love to do audios with you and stuff like that. And I said, I also want to let you know that in An Officer and a Gentleman, that time when you are doing pushups and the sergeant is just putting him through the ringer and Gere’s character just wouldn’t quit. I shared with him that i think of that scene when things are challenging in life. I related to him how inspirational that scene was to me
So he said, thanks. Oh, I appreciate that input. Yeah, a lot of people say that that was a moving scene and he was thankful. And then we talked about maybe doing audios together and we ended up doing a couple of things together. Great stuff.
I wanted to share that anecdote, but I also wanted to share, why was everyone was at the event in Madison Square Garden? It’s actually the Felt Form, adjacent to the main arena at MSG, the theater holds, about 5,000, I don’t know what that venue is called now. That was a sellout crowd. But the thing that was very interesting, and if you ever see when I do my lives, I have a picture of it in my podcast background in my office, the Kalachakra Mandala (see image at the bottom of this post) and initiation. So there were these incredible Tibetan monks focused and working consistently for many hours, around the clock, they were carefully building the mandala by placing the sand, grain by grain, to create an immaculate mandala. And, literally if anyone sneezed, they were back to the drawing board and had to fix it and start over.
So what’s the significance of the sand mandala, and what did they do afterwards? When they finished the creation, they took it apart. The beautiful image was gone! the monks went to the Hudson River and they took all the collected beautifully colored grains of sand sand and then ceremoniously dropped it all in the Hudson River. So what does that signify? It signifies the impermanence of life. The whole theme, of the Kalachakra ceremony is impermanence. Because yes, you can work day in and day 0ut, and live a whole life and in the blink of an eye – it’s over – the impermanence of life. I’m sharing this story for this community, everyone hustles, does their job, raises their family. But then you take all that beautiful sand and you say a prayer and it’s gone.
The Kalachakra initiation is a beautiful ceremony but it was more than just making a nice colorful image. It symbolizes taking a beautiful process, a beautiful life and just like that – it’s all gone and you honor it and you honor the impermanence and you give thanks for every moment. That’s my Steve Story about recording the Dalai Lama and working with Richard Gere.

]]>Getting a good night’s sleep requires a little planning and preparation. Developing a nighttime routine helps regulate the body’s internal clock. Disconnecting from electronic devices at least two hours before bedtime helps to set the mind and body up for sleep. Though challenging, allowing time to relax and unwind from the day’s constant activity is crucial for a good night’s rest.
Here are some other tips:
Wash your feet prior to getting into bed with warm water and your favorite soap. Take 3 drops of lavandin essential oil mixed with a tablespoon of sesame oil and massage it into your feet. Put a towel under your feet so as not to stain your sheets. Take three deep breaths and lie back and relax.
If you are feeling stressed and need a break, apply two drops of lavandin essential oil between the index finger and thumb. Massage the pressure point for four to five seconds, taking slow, deep breaths. Repeat on the other hand.

Hello friends, my name is Steve Stein. I’m the founder of Better Listen and Wisdom Feed. And wanna tell you a little anecdote about, let me start with this. A few months ago I heard a motivational speaker say something about resetting your why. I guess it stuck with me, that idea of resetting your why. Why do you get up in the morning?
Why do you do things? You know, what motivates you? So it got me thinking about different things that I’ve done over the years, producing self-help wellness. Metaphysical Street Smart Wisdom is our podcast. We’re trying to take ancient ideas down to street level, trying to make them practical for friends. Like for the friends I grew up with in Brooklyn, who,
if they heard the word chakra, their eyes would roll. Although by now, even my friends from Brooklyn are familiar with this stuff. That was once kind of lunatic fringe and now it’s mainstream. Well, here’s a quick story about this from my, let me go back to my wall to show you something. This is World of Relaxation from John Cab Zen.
What year was it from Holy Smokes, 1984. There’s a whole story how I found it initially, but that’s, I’ve already told that story. But for this story, you see this format, it, it’s a format that I think it’s half-inch real to real video, not easy to find a player that that could play that back. So in 1991,
we started working on turning this, getting the beautiful audio and music and the harps of cor, the harp of beautiful heart music and John’s incredible meditation for people in a hospital setting. So we turned it into a D V D, and we’ve sold some and we’ve given away literally thousands of these throughout the pandemic. I just wanted to tell you a story.
I was actually, this is the person came across this today. Brandon Smith was helping me edit, taking the components that we had from this old video and turning it into digital. So he was at, Brandon was editing it in Michigan and it was going fine, the whole editing process. Then I got an email from him and he said his girlfriend, this is years ago,
I haven’t been in touch with him. His girlfriend’s father had terminal brain cancer, you know, terrible story. And he was living with his girlfriend, or I’m not sure if they were living together, and she said, can she get a copy of this world of relaxation video from John Katzin that we were working on? Give it to her father, you know,
to see if it would help. Cause he was, you know, he was not well at all. And I asked John, and John said, as long as they give us feedback to see if it helps or not, sure, we’d be happy. You know, of course, be happy to share it. So about two weeks later, I get an email from Brandon,
maybe it was a handwritten note, I’m not sure. But two minutes later, two, two weeks later, I, I heard from Brandon and the quote from his, it wasn’t his father-in-law, but his girlfriend’s father, who was, you know, terminal brain cancer. Pretty sad. Anyway, we get an email that said, I don’t much go in for this kind of meditation stuff.
In fact, I’ve never meditated before in my life. I’ve listened to the tape two times and it’s the best I’ve ever felt in my life. I can’t wait. I can’t, what did he say? I can’t imagine this is, this was it. I can’t imagine how good I’ll feel when I listen to it every day. And I love that cause there was someone who didn’t know me or John Capson from Adam,
and it helped. And this is years ago. And that’s part of my why. That’s why I’ve been working almost all my adult career in getting out messages that are backed by science, inspiration, and practical things that could help people in everyday life. WHEN I WAS NINE, my mother died, so during a chunk of my chaotic childhood, I lived with my paternal grandparents — immigrants from Poland, observant Jews. Most of the practices of the household, like not turning on the lights on Saturday, the Sabbath, I simply followed with little interest or curiosity about any possible deeper meaning. Following along suited my general sense of numbness anyway. The Passover Seder, however, was a big exception.
I didn’t have a tremendous understanding of the layers of the Seder’s symbolism or values—but I felt a lot. I felt a stirring of joy at the coming together of family (even if my family didn’t look like the conventional picture I had in my head from TV), the tribal recognition of collective suffering (which painted a picture of a life I could actually feel I belonged within), the idea that life could be different, could be better, and that no matter how hard things were, you could imagine you were on your way to that better life.
I’d like to consider the Seder apart from religious identity, apart from leaning into the geopolitical realities of Israel, the Palestinian people, or Egyptians. I didn’t know any of that as a frightened child, and even as an adult, if I am marking the Passover Seder in some way, it’s my own way, with a consideration of all beings everywhere who are suffering, who seek a better life. The liturgical text, the Haggadah, that I’ve used for years is a Jewish Buddhist Haggadah, where quotations from Padmasambhava, who brought Buddhism from India to Tibet, and from the Buddha himself are laced throughout the depictions of the essential journey from bondage to liberation.
In Hebrew, the word conventionally translated as Egypt in the Haggadah is called mitzrayim. The name is derived from m’tzarim, meaning “narrow straits” (mi, “from”; tzar, “narrow” or “tight”): a place of constriction, tightness, limitation, or narrow-mindedness. Each of us lives, at least at times, in our own mitzrayim, the narrow straits of seeing few options, or being defined by someone else who has more power than we do in a situation, or feeling so unseen that we absorb someone’s projection so thoroughly we come perilously close to forgetting who we are.
Perhaps we’ve been engulfed by a personal tragedy or health crisis, so that taking that first tentative step out of overwhelm toward an uncertain but beckoning future seems untenable. Or our actions are so determined by what we have been taught to believe in contrast to what we can newly discover that our ability to know wonder or awe seems completely beside the point. Our personal Exodus is journeying out from an opaque world—where it’s difficult to breathe, where change, the ever-present rhythm of life, is all too muffled, where the tight bindings around our hearts keep them from generously nourishing our bodies, our feelings, our entire existence—to a wholly different kind of world. We journey from fixity to freedom.
CONTRACTION OR constriction isn’t the same as focusing, being one-pointed, being centered, or being contained. We can be specific, determined, intentional, without being constricted.
Think of the last time you were lost in fear. The last time you were harshly unforgiving of yourself.The last time you felt trapped. The last time a craving was so strong that all reason and common sense fled (remember, for example, those old infatuations). The last time any sense of potential change collapsed and you fell into hopelessness. Those are times we experience limited options, the blunting of our creativity, a feeling of disconnection, the dimming of our vision of what is possible.
Judson Brewer, author of Unwinding Anxiety, once said to me, “My personal practice comes together with my lab’s research in exploring the experience of contraction versus expansion and how that manifests in the world in so many ways.”
Jud—who is a psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and director of research and innovation at the Mindfulness Center at Brown University—began by telling me about a dynamic web of interconnection in the brain called the default mode network. The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC)—the hub of self-referential habits— is a key part of this network. In his research, he found that “when people were feeling guilty, they activated the PCC. When they were craving a bunch of different substances, they activated it. When they were ruminating, they activated it. When they were anxious, they activated it.”
What Jud and his team found was that the PCC correlated with a feeling of contraction: “The experience of anxiety, of guilt, of craving, of rumination—all of these— share literally an experiential component of contraction. We contract, and we close down.”
