Thomas Moore calls himself an epicurean, not someone given to overindulgence but understanding the importance of pleasure and beauty.
He sees a connection between the repression of pleasure and an urge toward depression and violence. He recommends a life of deep, stable pleasures such as friendship, home, play, and a satisfying sexuality.
